Laval, October 6, 2021 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that, in addition to federal public sector workers, airline, railway and marine employees will also have to be vaccinated, including retail and hospitality employees in the federal sector.
“Vaccination has become mandatory for many Canadian workers,” explained François Laporte, President of Teamsters Canada. “Our representatives with the federal government will be attending meetings over the next few days to obtain all the details that concern our members.”
Medical and religious exemptions protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act will continue to be respected.
Federal public service workers will have until November 15 to submit their proof of vaccination. For workers in other federal industries, the deadline is yet to be determined.
Workers who refuse to be vaccinated could be put on unpaid leave by their employer.
“We know there will be a grace period for people who want to be vaccinated, but we do not have all the details yet,” said the union leader. “We are working diligently to get all of the accurate information to communicate to our members as soon as possible.”
The Teamsters Union is closely monitoring the situation and will pass on all information on this subject as soon as it becomes available.
